Daniel Jay Gokey, professionally known as Danny Gokey, is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on April 24, 1980, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Gokey gained national recognition as a finalist on the eighth season of American Idol in 2009. His personal story, including the tragic loss of his first wife, Sophia, four weeks before his audition, became a significant part of his public identity. He is now married to Leyicet Peralta Gokey, and they have four children.
Initially, Gokey pursued a career in country music, releasing his debut album, My Best Days, in 2010. His music has since evolved, primarily into the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) genre, with elements of blue-eyed soul and pop. He is celebrated for his powerful, soulful vocals and for writing songs with uplifting messages of hope and faith.
He has been associated with several record labels throughout his career. He initially signed with 19 Recordings and RCA Nashville, before moving to BMG Rights Management and later Capitol CMG.
